Subject: MSOFFICE GONE

My computer got hit by a virus.  The system was having major problems.  I called technical support (in India) - I explained the situation and that I thought I needed to restore the computer and asked if that would put everything back on the way I got it.  The woman on the phone told me that would be the best thing to do. In other words, wipe everything off and then start over.  She gave me another number.  I called and ordered a restore cds - I paid an extra twenty dollars to expedite the shipping.  I got the disks, I wiped out my computer and re-installed everything.  However, the computer no longer has Microsoft Office on it, which was the purpose of me purchasing this computer.
So I call back the technical people thinking that I did something wrong.  After I was transferred to five different people and therefore put on hold five times (They were trying to find the right department for me to talk to) I was told to call the people who sold me the disks.  So I called them, only then was I informed that the factory settings that the disks reinstate do not include Microsoft Office.  I explained that I bought the computer with Office already on it, that was how it came.  They couldn't help me.  They gave me the customer support person who was extremely snippy as she told me that I should back everything up.  I informed her that you need a key to re-install a program so even if the program had been backed up, I wouldn't be able to re-install it without a key.  She couldn't help me and did not care at all that it was COMPAQ's technical team that told me to wipe the computer out - that they assured me that everything would come on the disks.  This is an awful company...this laptop cost me around $800 after rebate and now I will have to spend almost $500 to get the programs I need.  If the computer didn't have these programs, I wouldn't have bought it.  These re the only programs I use the computer for (other than internet access).  I suggest that people avoid Compaq at all costs.
Perhaps to a very computer savy person they might somehow know what you get back with a restore cd and what you don't, but I am just a home user so when the qualified people assure you that everything will go back to the way the computer was when you bought it, you believe them.
