Lets see where should I start. I ordered a Compaq notebook at a very reasonable price. I asked that the basic system be upgraded to 20 gig hard drive. What Compaq doesn't tell customers is that the operating software is stored on your computer. Compaq doesn't send you the operating disks like the other companies. They store their software on YOUR hard drive. So when I ordered 20 G I got a 15.8G. The rest is partitioned:FALSE ADVERTISING! What that means is when there is a problem with lets say a driver, instead of inserting one disk and fixing the problem you pop in the "restore " disk that they send you and it restores the computer to all the original settings. Any other stuff you have on the computer is gone. If I had the operating disks I may be able to just correct the problem instead of erasing months of work because Compaq is cheap. When I called to complain they did offer to send me the disks. IF I PAID FOR THEM! Another way to make money. Next; Did you know that Compaq blocks the Microsoft update web page. Where everyone should go to upgrade the software once a month or so. Again I called and I said to them "how can you block access to an open site?" they told me that the computer upgrades itself through the Compaq site. I wanted to know how I could tell when it was being done. I was told there was no way for me to tell. But I was free to go to any other site and download what I needed.(in this case it was explorer 6.0) I said thanks but since the Microsoft site scans my computer to tell me what critical update I was missing, unless he would offer to keep track with a pad and pen what updates I had and didn't over the coming years the site might be a better option. To
bring this all together I told Compaq that I couldn't download AOL 7.0
. They said it was a new program and probably my windows
"drivers"
had to be upgraded to be download it.(this is wrong by the way/ Compaq
service reps don't know the first thing about their computers). I
played
along: "I can't upgrade because I can't get to the site, you have it
blocked.
I can't reinstall because I'll lose everything on the computer since
you
never sent me systems disks and apparently the automatic update
you
were telling me about wasn't working or else I'd have 7.0 by now." "So
I should thank AOL because if 7.0 didn't come out I wouldn't have
known that your computer isn't doing what it's should
be."
